How to Earn Student Service Hours That Actually Count

Understanding Student Service Hour Requirements

Most high schools, colleges, honor societies, and scholarship programs require a specific number of documented volunteer hours. But requirements differ by program — and not all service activities automatically qualify.

What Typically Qualifies as Service Hours

• Volunteering at nonprofits, food banks, shelters, or community organizations
• Tutoring or mentoring younger students
• Participating in organized clean-ups, drives, or community events
• Assisting with religious or civic organizations (varies by school)
• Independent service like stocking blessing boxes or visiting nursing homes

What Usually Doesn't Count

• Paid work, even for a nonprofit
• Service to immediate family members
• Class-required activities that are graded
• Fundraising where you personally benefit

How to Document Hours for School

Most schools want:

1. A completed log with dates, hours, and activity descriptions
2. A supervisor signature or contact for verification
3. Supporting documentation (photos, certificates, or letters)

ServeTogether's Service Dashboard generates exportable reports that include all of this information in a clean, professional format — perfect for school submissions.
